Calcium formate

Calcium formate is an organic compound used as a feed additive for various animals, offering benefits such as acidification, mold prevention, and antibacterial effects. It is also employed industrially as an additive in concrete and mortar, for leather tanning, or as a preservative.

Main Applications

1. As a Novel Feed Additive. Feeding calcium formate promotes weight gain; using it as an additive in piglet feed enhances appetite and reduces diarrhea rates. Adding 1% to 1.5% calcium formate to the daily diet of weaned piglets significantly improves their growth performance. Research in Germany found that adding 1.3% calcium formate to the diet of weaned piglets improved feed conversion rates by 7% to 8%, while adding 0.9% reduced the incidence of diarrhea. Zheng Jianhua (1994) added 1.5% calcium formate to the diet of 28-day-old weaned piglets and, after 25 days of feeding, observed a 7.3% increase in daily weight gain, a 2.53% improvement in feed conversion rate, and 10.3% and 9.8% increases in protein and energy utilization rates, respectively, with a significant reduction in diarrhea. Wu Tianxing (2002) added 1% calcium formate to the diet of crossbred weaned piglets, resulting in a 3% increase in daily weight gain, a 9% improvement in feed conversion rate, and a 45.7% reduction in diarrhea rates. Other points to note: Calcium formate is effective around the weaning period because the piglets' own secretion of hydrochloric acid strengthens with age; calcium formate contains 30% easily absorbable calcium, so it is important to adjust the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio when formulating feed.

2. Construction Early Strength Agent. Used as a rapid setting agent, lubricant, and early strength agent for cement. It is added to building mortar and various types of concrete to accelerate the hardening of cement and shorten the setting time, particularly during winter construction to prevent slow setting at low temperatures. It facilitates quick demolding, allowing cement to gain strength earlier and be put into use sooner. Applications of calcium formate: various dry-mix mortars, concrete, wear-resistant materials, flooring industry, feed industry, and leather tanning. Usage and precautions: The recommended dosage per ton of dry-mix mortar or concrete is about 0.5% to 1.0%, with a maximum addition of 2.5%. The dosage of calcium formate increases gradually as the temperature decreases; even a dosage of 0.3-0.5% in summer can produce a noticeable early strength effect.

3. Fertilizer Raw Material. The calcium in calcium formate is a source of calcium that is easily absorbed by most plants, making it highly favored by fertilizer manufacturers.
