Xylene

1. Physical Properties

Xylene is a colorless transparent liquid;

Density: 0.86;

Boiling point: 138.35–144.42°C;

It is a product formed by the substitution of two hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring with methyl groups. Xylene has a characteristic odor, is flammable, miscible with ethanol and chloroform in any proportion, and insoluble in water. It is moderately toxic and has certain carcinogenic properties. It is generally a mixture of p-xylene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and ethylbenzene. The grades are typically superior and first-grade products with a distillation range of 3°C and 5°C for purified water.

2. Storage Matters

Store sealed in a cool place; packaged in galvanized iron drums, each containing 180 kg; it can also be transported in tankers.

3. Functions and Uses

Mixed xylene solvent is widely used as a solvent in industries such as coatings, resins, dyes, and inks; it serves as a synthetic monomer in the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries; it can also be used as a high-octane gasoline component and is an important organic chemical raw material. Isomeric xylene is mainly used in the production of PX and OX.
