Levodopa

Levodopa, as we all know, revolutionized the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and remains to this day, the best drug and the most efficacious treatment for our patients. But it also transformed neurology in general. With the ability to change people from being disabled to functional, neurology became an attractive field for young medical students. Levodopa provided clues about choreas and dystonias, and allowed us to put the basal ganglia in perspective, thus spawning the subspecialty of movement disorders and, of course, The Movement Disorder Society. The impact of levodopa cannot be underestimated, and therefore, the history of how levodopa came about is revealing and instructive as we move forward looking for even better treatments.
