II. Energy Advantages of Powder Coating for Coating Powders:

(1) Excellent Environmental Protection Performance

The "three wastes" pollution has become a global issue. Among them, the air pollution caused by solvent-based paint coating has attracted extensive attention from various countries, and the restrictions on VOC emissions from automotive coating are becoming increasingly strict.

Driven by strict environmental regulations, powder coatings, like other green coatings, have been rapidly promoted and used worldwide. Traditional liquid spraying processes can achieve the goal of reducing VOC emissions by increasing energy consumption.

However, automotive body powder coating achieves zero VOC emissions, produces less and non-toxic waste, and there is no need to treat the tail gas generated during the curing process through exhaust gas combustion chambers and/or other methods.

With the development of powder coating technology, the application fields of powder coatings will continue to expand, and their proportion in industrial coatings will also increase. Therefore, powder coatings will be one of the coating varieties with the fastest growth in output.

(2) Simple Process, Small Floor Area, and Recyclable Coatings

Generally, the space required for applying powder coatings is smaller than that for traditional liquid coatings, reducing the floor area of the spray booth.

Since there are no coating defects such as sagging and bubbles that may occur during the traditional liquid coating spraying process, the spraying operation of powder coatings is also easier.

At the same time, due to the adoption of electrostatic spraying, the one-time spraying thickness of powder coating can reach 40~50μm, which improves the coating efficiency. Moreover, powder coatings are recyclable, and powder coating equipment is easy to maintain and clean, reducing downtime and required labor.

(3) Energy Saving

The energy required for powder coating is less than that for liquid coating systems. The powder coating spray booth can maintain air closed-loop circulation, which greatly reduces the energy consumption required for its operation.

Although the curing temperature of powder coating is relatively high, the large amount of energy saved by the spray booth offsets this. According to estimates from some OEM enterprises, the energy consumption of a powder coating spray booth is 80% lower than that of a liquid coating spray booth of the same scale.

Another main reason for energy saving is that there is no need for exhaust gas treatment. It is estimated that the power and natural gas required for powder coating are only 1/3 to 1/2 of those for traditional liquid coating.

In 2005, Jeffery Johnson from Haden Company compared the coating equipment and production costs of automotive body primers using powder coatings, water-based coatings, and solvent-based coating systems.

According to the estimation, compared with solvent-based coating, powder coating can save 2.5 euros per vehicle; compared with water-based coating, it can save 6.30 euros. This indicates that the production cost of powder coating is 38% lower than that of water-based coating and 10% lower than that of solvent-based coating.

(4) Improved Coating Quality

Powder coatings have various excellent properties, can provide high-quality protection performance, and can replace one or more layers of coatings in traditional liquid coating systems.

For example, the liquid coatings (basecoat + clearcoat) used on hubcaps and many exterior body parts have been replaced by powder coatings.

In addition, powder coating can achieve appearance quality that liquid coating cannot obtain. Using powder coating allows manufacturers to produce unique and hard-to-replicate colors and effects, which helps to innovate the design of the entire vehicle.

(5) Improved Operator Working Environment

Workers are satisfied with using powder coatings. This system is odorless, greatly reducing the demand for protective equipment. The spraying equipment is easy to use, clean, and maintain, and this relaxed operation can reduce the training time for operators.
